Oxnard Dentists Remind Pregnant Women To Stay Vigilant About Oral Health
OXNARD, CA (PRWEB) November 12, 2014 -- Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad, leading Oxnard cosmetic dentists, have written a blog post this month discussing the elevated oral health risks women face during pregnancy.
Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad are the prosthodontists at the Anacapa Dental Art Institute, which operates offices in Woodland Hills and Oxnard. In their Nov. 7 blog post published to their website (http://www.DentalImplantsVentura.com), Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad write that pregnant women are at a higher risk of gum disease and tooth decay because of physiological changes that occur in their body during the gestational period.
According to the American Dental Association, about 40 percent of women will develop some form of gingivitis during their pregnancy. The condition is so common that physicians refer to the issue as “pregnancy gingivitis.” Gum disease, which has been connected to heart disease and diabetes, is so prevalent in pregnant women because they are more susceptible to inflammation, they write.
But gum disease does not affect only the mother. Studies have shown that the disease can affect the mother’s unborn child, as well. The Journal of the American Dental Association linked pregnancy gingivitis to premature birth, finding that women with the disease were at least four times more likely to deliver their child nearly a month early.
“We know that gum disease can negatively affect your body’s overall health, which is why it is so important for expecting mothers to visit our office regularly during their pregnancy. Anything that affects a mother’s health, like gum disease, can also affect the health of their unborn child,” said Dr. Jivraj, who is one of the top cosmetic dentists in Southern California.
Signs of gum disease include bleeding, tender or swollen gums, receding gums, bad breath and even loose teeth. Dr. Reshad reminds expecting mothers to practice good oral health by brushing their teeth twice a day, flossing daily and maintaining their dental office visits. He invites expecting mothers to schedule their appointments with Anacapa Dental Art Institute today.
