Some Of Us Face Uphill Genetic Battle With Oral Health, Oxnard Dentist Says
OXNARD, CA (PRWEB) November 13, 2014 -- Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad, two of the leading prosthodontists in Southern California, have a message for patients who practice good oral hygiene but still find themselves undergoing cavity and gum disease procedures: It may not be your fault.
The Oxnard dentists have written a blog about how oral health issues can be inherited and not created solely by poor oral hygiene. In their blog published Nov. 11 to their website (http://www.DentalImplantsVentura.com), Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad write that researchers have found that genetics account for about 60 percent of the risk of tooth decay.
“Just like the shape and size of our teeth, genetics play a factor in the tooth risk of cavities,” said Dr. Jivraj, who provides Oxnard All-On-4™ dental implants and other restorative dentistry services. “At Anacapa Dental Art Institute, we see a variety of patients, all of whom have different dental needs. We can provide comprehensive treatment in order to give them a beautiful and confident smile.”
The pair write that patients with persistent dental issues such as tooth decay or weak enamel could seek treatments like dental sealants or even veneers to help correct the issues. Sealants are used to protect the surface of the tooth from acid exposure that creates cavities, while veneers are thin porcelain shells commonly used on patients with poor enamel, deep stains, chips, cracks or breaks on front teeth.
While genes are believed to be responsible for about 60 percent of the risk of tooth decay, patients can still control their oral health by brushing twice a daily, flossing daily and visiting Anacapa Dental Art Institute for regular cleanings and exams, they write.
