Attention Students: Apply Now for AHRC Nassau’s 2015 Fierstein Memorial Scholarship
(PRWEB) November 07, 2014 -- College is expensive and AHRC Nassau can help. The Blanche Fierstein Memorial Scholarship, a $5,000 scholarship awarded to a college student who is pursuing an advanced degree in the field of special education, is accepting applications for fall semester 2015. To be eligible you must meet one or more of the following criteria: be enrolled in a college or university in Nassau County; an employee of AHRC Nassau who has been employed for a minimum of (1) year, OR an AHRC Nassau Lifetime Member.
The Award was established by the AHRC Board of Directors to commemorate the contributions of beloved board member Blanche Fierstein, an educator, mother and tireless advocate. Inspired by her own daughter with special needs, Ms. Fierstein became a special education teacher quickly rising through the NYC Department of Education. She was appointed Principal of the Queens Occupational Training Center, creating practical curricula and quality standards in vocational training. Her ground breaking work and tireless resolve helped shaped vocational training across New York State.
She brought that same dedication to her volunteer service and in her work as a parent advocate. She served as an officer of AHRC Nassau’s Board for 10 years in addition to her 35 years as Board Member for AHRC New York City. She became a Lifetime Member of NYSARC in 1951 serving on numerous NYSARC committees, eventually serving an unprecedented 13 years as its President.
