Pearson today announced improvements to its on-demand tutoring service that are designed to improve institutional and learner outcomes in online education. The Smarthinking reporting dashboard provides institutions with extensive data and detailed insight into their students’ use of the online tutoring service; the ability for administrators to more easily self-generate reports for efficacy studies; views into student survey statistics; and other valuable information. Institutions can leverage this intelligence to determine best practices for online tutoring implementation models to maximize the positive impact on student retention and success.

St. Petersburg College’s Director of Learning Resources, Joseph Leopold, said, “At St. Petersburg College, we use data to inform the decisions we make on a daily basis, especially when it comes to ensuring student success. The new Smarthinking dashboard provides me easy access to valuable data that, on a weekly basis, allows us to provide early alerts to faculty; to follow and react to academic support trends; and to plan for subsequent terms. All of this information and analysis helps us maximize our support of students and our investment of resources."

Additional, recent upgrades to Smarthinking include the following:

  •     iPad app, which provides students with greater access to live tutoring services anytime and anywhere
  •     Text message notification, which enables students to opt to register their cell phone numbers to receive text message notification of the return of their reviewed writing from the Smarthinking Writing Center, and pre-scheduled appointment reminders providing students faster alerts in a format of their choice
  •     Voice-enabled whiteboard, which allows students and tutors to speak voice-to-voice, while engaged with the interactive whiteboard. This allows students who may be auditory learners to be supported in a manner conducive to their learning style

Pearson’s VP of Readiness & Retention, Chuck Kleiner, said, “As the leading online tutoring provider in higher education, Pearson's Smarthinking is committed to the success of our educational partners and their students. In response to institutional and learner needs, these innovative enhancements, such as the reporting dashboard, allow easy access to the data necessary to measure the positive impact of effective online tutoring on student success.”

Pearson’s Smarthinking online tutoring focuses on the unique needs of each student and helps improves learning outcomes through more than five million sessions to date.
