The trails through the jungle are really tough, with a lot of mud and roots, and most of the beaches are rocky; but once you arrive to Tulemar, the well maintained trails and the nice sandy beach really give you a break.

For the second year in a row, Tulemar beach has been part of the 10 kilometer course for the “Manuel Antonio Extreme” beach race, Reto M.A.E., organized by local non-profit foundation Fundacion Sonrisas y Esperanzas for children in need.

In its second edition, the race that was created a year ago to raise funds for orphans in the area, nearly doubled the number of participants over the previous year. Two options were given to participants; the complete 10 kilometer route or a 7 kilometer walk, both which had the same finish line location.

The race started at 7:00 AM at Marina Pez Vela in nearby Quepos, continued through the mountains and several beaches along the Pacific coastline, and ended on Manuel Antonio public beach. About half- way through the race, participants crossed the grounds inside Tulemar, a 33-acre gated resort with over 45 unique luxury villas, hiking trails, and a secluded beach; just what a beach trail race requires.

Julien Buralli, a personal concierge at Tulemar, participated in the challenge and explains, “the trails through the jungle are really tough, with a lot of mud and roots, and most of the beaches are rocky; but once you arrive to Tulemar, the well maintained trails and the nice sandy beach really give you a break.”

Tulemar is Manuel Antonio’s top rated resort, known for its luxury rentals, and well-kept grounds with lush gardens, natural trails, lookout points, and wildlife.

Out of 142 participants, Josue Cordero Lopez was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 54 minutes and 24 seconds, followed 2 seconds later by Alvaro Arce Leon, last year’s winner. Plans for a third Reto M.A.E event in 2015 event are anticipated.
