In Wake of Ebola, Dentist Aims to Keep the Well... Well
RIDGELAND, MS (PRWEB) November 11, 2014 -- Medical Grade Innovations (MGI) today announced that the company will install its novel WellFocused System at Westover and Associates in Boulder, Colorado. The WellFocused System offers medical/dental practices and healthcare professionals an added layer of infection detection and prevention that can help limit the spread of disease to other patients or healthcare workers, while also providing effective practice management tools. Dentist and maxillofacial prosthodontist, Dr. Brock Westover, is installing the system at all of his locations around the country, including his Boulder, CO practice.
Recent headlines regarding the Ebola virus and Enterovirus D68, expedited Dr. Westover’s vision to provide a way to gauge whether a patient, supplier or employee may be sick or infectious prior to entering his practice for work or treatment.
“We encounter blood and saliva on a daily basis, which we know are key modes of transmission for harmful bacteria and viruses. The WellFocused System allows me to provide peace-of-mind to my patients and employees that we are taking a proactive approach to maintaining wellness and reducing the potential for contagion spread within our offices using comprehensive infection control strategies,” said Dr. Westover.
MGI President of Science & Technology, Dr. Murray Cohen, MPH, CIH, worked closely with Dr. Westover and his staff to implement the appropriate components of the WellFocused System in his office. Dr. Cohen, a retired Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Public Health Officer, is a specialist in biosafety programs and works closely with dental and medical offices to implement infection control programs that are effective and not cumbersome for the patient or staff.
“Dr. Westover and his staff frequently handle immunocompromised patients with cancer-related dental issues. These patients are treated in the same office as those who are well, and those who may be infectious,” said Dr. Cohen. “We provide practices like his the tools they need to manage office wellness, all while collecting that data in real-time, so we can conduct further analysis to find ways to constantly improve infection detection and prevention.”
The WellFocused System includes:
1. WelloStations™ – Temperatures of each patient, supplier and employee will be taken prior to entry into the office using a patented, hands-free fever detection system, which reads and stores basal body temperature in a HIPAA compliant, SAS70 Certified Cloud within three seconds. The WelloStation can be integrated into most patient check-in, electronic medical records, and administrative systems.
2. Medical Grade Scrubs - Medical Grade Scrubs provide an added layer of protection for dental workers because they are bacteriostatic (do not allow bacteria to grow). Due to the bodily fluids dentists and their employees encounter on a daily basis, Medical Grade Scrubs will minimize each worker’s exposure and ability to transmit colonized pathogens to a patient or to each other. In AATCC100 method testing (an antimicrobial fabric test), Medical Grade Scrubs were shown to have durable antimicrobial technology that was 99.9% effective at stopping the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae after 50 washings. Medical Grade Scrubs are also moisture wicking, odor repellant, and stain resistant.
3. RFID Technology – All data on basal body temperature of employees and garment compliance, will be collected via radio-frequencey identification (RFID) chip technology and stored in the HIPAA compliant and SAS70 certified WelloCloud. The RFID technology allows practices to review their infection control efforts and make improvements, if needed. RFID also acts as an inventory control tool and can be configured to record additional data as needed.
4. Training – Dr. Cohen and his team have reimagined best practices to stay ahead of the spread of infection and viruses. An International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) accredited program and in-office support provided through the Frontline Healthcare Workers Safety Association will be provided to Dr. Westover and his staff to keep everyone up-to-date on the latest options for ensuring compliance and best practices.
About Medical Grade Innovations (MGI)
MGI believes that the overall wellness in healthcare and the community at-large can be improved, in part, by setting up proactive and preventative barriers that protect healthcare professionals and their patients. We realize that in order to improve an entire medical environment, we need to look at all of its components. The people entering and exiting, the physicians, the patients, the suppliers - and the list goes on. This is why MGI aims to research, train and commercialize advancements in a variety of fabrics, wellness systems and procedural applications in healthcare. In doing so, we hope to create and introduce programs that combine these new technologies and fabrics with unique worker, community, and supplier wellness initiatives.
