Academy of Art University Showcases Its Collection of Vintage Cars at the San Francisco Chronicle 57th Annual International Auto Show

Academy of Art University’s dazzling selection of vintage collectible cars on display at the San Francisco Chronicle 57th Annual International Auto Show at Moscone Center, Nov. 22-29, is an annual tradition not to be missed.

Amid a vast convention center with hundreds of shiny, new, cutting-edge cars that have yet to hit the roadway, there’s a rare fraternity of old-timers with a lifetime of stories, journeys and owner memories behind their seat belts.

Academy of Art University’s dazzling selection of vintage collectible cars on display at the San Francisco Chronicle 57th Annual International Auto Show at Moscone Center, Nov. 22-29, is an annual tradition not to be missed. Though they’re now viewed as venerable, museum-quality examples of the past, each of the exquisite models featured was considered revolutionary when introduced to the market. And, as students of Academy of Art University’s Industrial Design program can attest, they have much to offer scholars of contemporary automotive design.

Part of a larger collection housed at Academy of Art University Automobile Museum on Van Ness Avenue, the unique examples on display at the Auto Show include a few recent acquisitions, such as the stunning maroon Tucker 48.

The captivating 1948 beauty, nicknamed the “Tucker Torpedo,” has been a muse of Hollywood movie makers and stands out in a crowd with its unusual third steering headlight. It was designed with many then-innovative safety and design features including the pop-out shatterproof windshield and placement of the engine and drive train in the rear of the car. Academy of Art University is proud to own the third Tucker 48 produced. In all, only 51 were manufactured.

Visitors will also be smitten with the noir 1935 Duesenberg SJ Convertible Coupe, known to reach 135 mph. The epitome of elegance, this comfortable, classic coupe is a seasoned world traveler, thanks to its many adventurous past owners, including William Randolph Hearst.

And then there’s the Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow, an ultra-rare Art Deco jewel that emerged during the Depression. With streamlined, modern features, it debuted at the New York Auto Show in 1933 with a bold slogan: “Suddenly it’s 1940!” Despite the fanfare, only five were produced, of which three remain. The Pierce-Arrow company folded before the arrival of the much-heralded 1940s.

Also on display: Sleek Italian design in the form of a striking red and black 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Atalante Coupe and mod 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB; a majestic 1928 Daimler Royal Limousine and the racy 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe.
