The human immune system that protects us from disease requires fresh water to function properly according to biogenetic researcher Yuan Fang, MD, PhD, speaking on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water radio show. Increasing one’s fresh water intake, says Yuan, almost always improves the ability to fight off diseases such as flu, colds, and even Ebola. The precise amount of fresh water required varies according to one’s general health, lifestyle and genetic makeup.

Every structure, organ and cell in the human body, Yuan and Kleyne agree, requires a continuous infusion of fresh water to function – including teeth, bones and the immune system. Genome research, Yuan believes, will eventually enable doctors to determine precisely how much fresh water each individual requires per day to maintain an optimally functioning immune system.

The current African Ebola epidemic underscores the importance of fresh water. The hardest hit countries, according to Yuan and Kleyne - Liberia, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone - are notorious for their inadequate fresh water supply. Even when people get enough to drink, the water is often impure and there may not be enough to permit hand and dish washing, and bathing. When the immune system is compromised by dehydration, waterborne microorganisms, or organisms lingering on dirty hands, vulnerability to diseases such as flu and Ebola increases.    

Nigeria recently made news, according to Kleyne, because they were able to eliminate Ebola simply by providing bottled water to citizens. The death rate was cut in half by having exposed patients drink 1.5 gallons of fresh water per day, to which “oral rehydration solution” – a small amount of salt and sugar – had been added. Oral rehydration solution enables the body to absorb fluids even if it has severe diarrhea and vomiting.

Not everyone exposed to a virus comes down with the disease, Yuan notes. That could be the result numerous factors including a healthier immune system. Due to genetic differences, says Yuan, one person’s immune system may require more fresh water to attain the same level of protection as another person’s. But they all require fresh water. .

For maximum immune system benefit and disease resistance, Kleyne suggests eight glasses of fresh water per day in addition to all other fluid intake. Increase this to 10 to 12 glasses if coming down with the flu or a cold. Begin with two full glasses upon rising. Sugar, caffeine and alcohol are dehydrating and should be avoided. Water should be consumed in full glasses rather than sipped. Children ten or under should drink half their body weight in ounces per day.
