Capira Technologies LLC, a software and mobile app technology developer for libraries, announced today integration abilities with indoor location tool iBeacon and their customized mobile apps for libraries.
iBeacon Integration allows libraries with CapiraMobile Apps to interact with their patrons using indoor micro location services over Bluetooth. iBeacons are currently used in many retail locations to interact with customers, but are now being brought to libraries. iBeacons are small battery powered devices that broadcast wireless messages, with adjustable ranges as small as 1 foot and as large as 250 feet. Libraries can control the placement, range, and desired functionality of each iBeacon. iBeacons can be used in conjunction with the library app so that patrons can be reminded about account notices the moment they enter the library, be notified about upcoming events when entering a specific branch or section, and also allows the library to identify and analyze traffic throughout the areas where beacons are placed.
"This is a new way to personalize a patrons experience at the library." said Michael Berse, Managing Partner and Lead Software Engineer of Capira Technologies. "For example, patrons can now be reminded about items due that day they may have forgotten to bring with them when they arrive at the building, or walk into a specialty section such as Local History and see information about it on their device.
Patrons must have the library app installed in order for their device to recognize and interact with beacons placed in the building. Privacy is always a concern for services that need to track user actions or movements. Downloading an app or update containing iBeacon Integration prompts patrons about whether they want to allow the required Bluetooth location services to run in the background. This allows the patron to have control over their device and interaction with the library beacons, as well as complying with the Apple and Google user privacy requirements. If a patron disables the background services they cannot access any of the beacon specific features until they allow it at a later time.
