Modern parenting happens both offline and online.

The startup Copilot Family has now released for free its groundbreaking tool to assist parents and schools in navigating children’s technology use.
Available on Apple, Android, and soon Windows, Copilot Family is a mobile device management system with extensive features for parents to set family and age-specific boundaries to help manage and protect their children online. Unlike other parental apps or services, Copilot Family works across all mobile platforms, allowing an iOS device to manage a device on an Android operating system, and vise versa, for families using diverse technologies.
Modern parenting happens both offline and online. Copilot Family understands this, and extends the typical parental guidance and support found offline to the online world. Copilot Family is noteworthy in its ability to allow a parent to set sensible limitations on smartphone and tablet functions both at home and remotely while a child is at school or elsewhere.
The helpful free tool allows parents to temporarily remove downloaded apps and specify what other features of the smartphone or tablet are available and when. A smartphone taken to school can have temporarily disabled features, such as camera use, along with reduced app availability and Internet access. And at bedtime, the Internet browser and game center can be shut off automatically.
Similar to other activities in a child’s life, tech use grows as they mature, and under the support and guidance of a parent. The Copilot Family management console allows parents to view the location, battery level, and activity on a device. What each child does with their device is only accessible by the parent, and only to the extent the parent chooses to access it. The focus is on navigating technology as a family, and allowing the parent to be a supportive copilot. To support the collaborative nature, the parent and child can communicate directly through Copilot Family’s messaging system.
“Copilot Family is about improving parenting in the online arena,” states David Polgar, Communications Director for Copilot Family. “While we expect a certain amount of guidance at home and at school, the rapidly-expanding online world is often supervised in a haphazard manner. Copilot Family provides families with a powerful tool to grow together.”
Ensuring privacy is also a major focus of Copilot Family. “As parents, one of our principal concerns is the privacy of our own children,” states founder and CEO Paul Blackstone, a noted mobile security expert. “We extend the same protections we have in place for our own children to all children using devices with Copilot Family. Importantly, any user-created information on a device using Copilot Family is fully encrypted, and only available to the parent.”
