SAE International Announces Membership to InCommon U.S. Access Management Federation, Use of Shibboleth for Digital Library
WARRENDALE, Pa. (PRWEB) November 19, 2014 -- SAE International, a publisher of industry leading research and standards, is pleased to announce it now is a member of the U.S.-based InCommon Federation as a Shibboleth Service Provider. The result means easier access for students and faculty to the SAE Digital Library from outside the University network by using University login credentials.
The SAE Digital Library offers the most cost-effective way to access more than 130,000 full-text technical papers, standards, ebooks, and magazines from SAE International and other renowned organizations. The search engine and user-friendly layout make it easy for researchers to find, download, and share a wealth of current and historical content.
Shibboleth is a standards based, open source software package enabling web-based single sign-on authentication across or within organizational boundaries. It allows institutions to make informed authorization decisions for individual access of protected online resources in a privacy-preserving manner. The Shibboleth® technology delivers single sign-on and federated administration of protected resources. Information is exchanged between an SAE International customer (Identity Provider) and the SAE Digital Library platform (Service Provider), allowing seamless access to SAE Digital Library content without providing additional login credentials.
"We are very excited about this announcement,” Nigel Watts, Senior Product Manager for SAE International, said. “Accessing SAE International’s renowned knowledge and content is now easier than ever for students and faculty; helping to further the mission and vision of SAE International to be the leader in connecting and educating the global engineering community."
Key benefits to customers and end-users are three-fold:
• Administrative Convenience – it will reduce the number of login credentials a user has to remember to access external resources that their library has provided to them, reducing the burden of username/password administration.
• Easier Resource Administration – users will not have to manage access to the SAE Digital Library differently from other library resources. One username/password works for all without the library managing anything.
• User Convenience – university’s current access to the SAE Digital Library via IP authentication and/or username and password remains unchanged. Shibboleth access is one more convenient way for users to get to SAE International’s content.
