BLEacon™ Announces End-to-End Product Development Platform for Bluetooth® low energy Devices

The BLEacon platform uniquely leverages Bluetooth low energy devices and a distributed communications system with a cloud based interface, simplifying the integration, interaction and management of Bluetooth Smart devices for the Internet of Things.

BLEacon Technologies, LLC, a privately held Kirkland, WA based company announced the launch of BLEacon™, a platform for the rapid development, prototyping, deployment and management of Bluetooth® low energy (“BLE”) Devices.

“The idea behind the Internet of Things (IoT) is not necessarily new,” says Ron Dicklin, BLEacon CTO and co-Founder. “We’ve been developing connected smart devices for the industrial market for decades. Bluetooth Smart has opened the door to the consumer and enterprise markets to take advantage of the benefits that smart connected devices provide. BLEacon will make it much easier for those companies looking to bring products and services into those markets.”

In a September 2014 Macroeconomic Insight Article titled “The Internet of Things: The next Mega-Trend,” The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., a global investment banking, securities and investment management firm cited that “The Internet of Things, or IoT, is emerging as the next technology mega-trend, with repercussions across the business spectrum. By connecting to the Internet billions of everyday devices – ranging from fitness bracelets to industrial equipment – the IoT merges the physical and online worlds, opening up a host of new opportunities and challenges for companies, governments and consumers.”

What makes BLEacon disruptive is that the architecture eliminates the dependency on smart phones or tablets and dedicated applications as the primary means to communicate between the devices and hosted services. Using off the shelf (OTS) development kits, such as the Bluetooth Smart SensorTag kit from Texas Instruments (TI) or a range of Bluetooth Smart-enabled devices that are broadly available through sites such as Alibaba, BLEacon provides a web-based programming interface that opens the door to a wide range of devices, developers and applications to support Bluetooth Smart devices and additional embedded sensor solutions.

“The BLEacon architecture is leveraging TI’s low power and highly integrated Bluetooth Smart hardware and software portfolio,” says Jarle Boe, systems applications manager, Wireless Connectivity Solutions at TI. “BLEacon’s development platform uses TI’s ecosystem to drive Bluetooth Smart into new end applications.”

The company did not comment on any specific clients, deployments or timeframe but did say they have been working with a large recognized brand to provide an early stage demonstration of a connected, location aware system.

Founded by Ron Dicklin, Co-founder of Root Metrics, and Craig Hummel, former Director of Business Development at BSQUARE Corporation, BLEacon enables rapid development, prototyping, deployment and management of Bluetooth™ low energy devices and supports a range of other MEMS sensors.
