Southern Medical Association Installs New President - Mark S. Williams, MD, MBA, JD, CPE
Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) November 20, 2014 -- The Southern Medical Association (SMA) is proud to announce the installation of Mark S. Williams, MD, MBA, JD, CPE as President for 2014-2015. Established in 1906, SMA is a multi-specialty medical association committed to providing physicians with education and information in order to provide quality patient care and lead the discussion on medical care reform.
A native of Alabama, Dr. Williams received his Medical Degree in 1980 from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. In 1995 he received his Master in Business Administration from Samford University; in 2001 he received his Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law; and in 2005 he became a Certified Physician Executive by the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Williams recently assumed the role of Chief Physician Executive for Tenet Healthcare and Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
Previously, Dr. Williams was the Chief Medical Officer of the North Mississippi Health System based in Tupelo, Mississippi – a system encompassing facilities and physicians in Alabama and Mississippi. North Mississippi is the largest rural health system in the United States and the recipient of the 2006 and 2012 National Malcolm Baldrige Award. Dr. Williams is also Clinical Associate Professor for the University of Alabama Department of Anesthesiology in Birmingham and he has been an oral examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology for almost 20 years. He is and is also an independent healthcare consultant to large employers. He was a member of the Mississippi Hospital Association’s Medicaid Reform Committee and was also a member of Mississippi’s Physician Workforce Committee. Dr. Williams’ unique combination of medical, business and legal skills contribute to his broad understanding of the healthcare environment and its relevance to a variety of vested constituents. Dr. Williams also serves on the Council of Medical Service for the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.
Dr. Williams became a member of Southern Medical Association in 1977. During his time with the Association, he has served as Chair of the Coordinating Committee on Quality and has represented SMA in various leadership roles including Associate Councilor from 2007-2010 and Councilor 2010-2013. He is a member and financial supporter of The Society of 1906 which provides financial support to the Research and Education Endowment Fund designed to provide grants and scholarships for medical students and physicians-in-training.
As President of the SMA, Dr. Williams will focus on demonstrating the value of membership in the Southern Medical Association. Consistent with the heritage of the SMA, Dr. Williams is committed to the belief that well informed physician leaders are best suited to design the future health care delivery models. The Southern Medical Association is committed to providing balanced and comprehensive information on the issues facing physicians and is especially well positioned to assist physicians in developing their leadership skills.
Dr. Williams and his wife, Sandi, reside in Indian Springs, Alabama. They have four children: Jason, Jessica, Sloan and Emily. They have one new grandchild born recently in Montana. Dr. Williams and his family enjoy wilderness rafting and hiking.
