Through an online game called KnowNote, users can play music without learning an instrument. The game is also now available as an app for iPad.

The app is available for free through the Apple iTunes Store at: https://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=933301994

By assigning musical notes to letters on the QWERTY keyboard, users learn how to play popular songs such as “Clocks” and “Fireflies.” The desktop platform was successfully funded on Kickstarter, which allowed the game’s creators to add 40 new songs within a year. All of the songs are legally licensed, and users can choose instruments from the options given, including the guitar, piano and clarinet.

The game instructs the user in real-time, which notes to play and for how long. If the notes are played correctly and for the proper amount of time, the player’s score increases. Like many popular games with a computer platform, KnowNote can be played solo or in competition in order to see who can play a song better.

Other features include a garage, which serves as a virtual showcase where players can trade their game-earned credits in for acquire flashy musical instruments and show them off to admiring fans. The game also has a studio function for the most adventurous users of all those who dream of writing their own music compositions.
