Westchester County Recommends Gifts that Give Back, A North Pole Adventure, Christmas Carol Readings, Winter Wonderland and More

The holiday season is magical in Westchester County. Through the end of December visitors can enjoy themed events like Santa visits and holiday lightings, a night at the theater and delicious dining at top-notch restaurants. Various hotels with packages for romantic, exciting and adventurous experiences offer convenience, comfort and charm while guests are entertained with all the county has to offer to make the season one to remember.

“There’s no better way to get in the holiday spirit to enjoy all that Westchester has to offer this winter with family and friends,” said County Executive Robert P. Astorino. “Holiday themed events, including the launch of ‘Winter Wonderland’ at Kensico Dam Plaza, great shopping, excellent dining options and hotel packages are some of the many activities to enjoy this season.”

Shopping Season is Here
Holiday shopping is easy and fun in Westchester County with so many different places to explore and find that special gift for your loved ones. Purchase gifts from Neiman Marcus Westchester’s Love to Give Collection Shop and give back to the community with 10 percent of the sales generated from each item to benefit ArtsWestchester, the county’s oldest and most-influential organization dedicated to artists and cultural organizations. Purchases at the Love to Give Collection Shop can be made at Neiman Marcus Westchester, located at The Westchester, 2 Maple Avenue in White Plains, through December 24. Westchester’s Ridge Hill shopping center is home to the new DreamPlace, The North Pole Adventure through Wednesday, December 24. The completely reimagined “Mall Santa” experience developed by the creative minds at DreamWorks Animation is an attraction that takes families on a virtual journey to the North Pole with the cast of characters from DreamWorks’ Shrek movies and culminates in a private, personalized meeting with the man of the season, Santa Claus. At the Cross County Shopping Center, families can enjoy entertainment throughout the season and take advantage of free parking. For example, take photos with Saint Nicholas himself through December 24 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays. In December, Santa’s hours will be extended. Cross County Shopping Center will also host Pet Photos with Santa on Monday, December 1; Monday, December 8; and Monday, December 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Lastly, Cross County Shopping Center is partnering with the Chabad of Yonkers to host a festive menorah lighting on December 18 at 6:00 p.m. The event will include a live musical concert with cultural dancing, treats and activities for children. The first-ever Westchester’s Winter Wonderland will transform the iconic Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla into a festive wonderland starting on Saturday, November 29 for everyone to celebrate this holiday season. There will be more than 2.5 million glittering LED lights choreographed to holiday music; a fabulous outdoor recreational ice skating rink (skating and skate rentals are an additional cost); boutique holiday vendors where visitors can browse for that perfect gift or treat; photos with Santa Claus; winter hay rides; the Wonderland Express ride; and a heated indoor food court offering a variety of dining options, wine and beer. A Sleigh Ride Together with You
Holiday time is a splendid occasion to visit the Rosen House at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts for Holiday Tea Musicales. On select days December 3-18, visit the landmark where the afternoon starts with a docent-led tour of the Rosen House, beautifully decorated for the season. It will be reminiscent of holidays past, when the Rosens were in residence at their beloved country home. The tour is followed by a joyful 45-minute concert of holiday music in the majestic Music Room. A special Afternoon Tea consisting of finger sandwiches, scones, scrumptious holiday treats (hot chocolate with marshmallows for the children), and a variety of teas, will be served in the wonderfully decked out Summer Dining Room to end a festive afternoon. Starting on Friday, November 28, Lyndhurst will exhibit A Very Duchess Holiday, a celebration of the couture of Anna Gould, the Duchess of Talleyrand, who was the last owner of the mansion. Lyndhurst will exhibit Anna’s couture against the backdrop of the mansion beautifully decorated for the holiday season. Additional pieces from the 10,000 piece collection include 19th century children’s toys, a family sleigh, holiday dinner services and a display of quilts and textiles. Overlooking the Hudson River in Tarrytown, Lyndhurst is one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions. The exhibition is seen on regular tours of the mansion, which are available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from November 28 through December 28th.

Also at Lyndhurst, Mr. Dickens Tells a Christmas Carol is an entertaining theatrical event for families to enjoy. An impersonator will recreate Charles Dickens’ own readings of the classic tale that brings the travails of Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim alive. Dickens wrote a Christmas Carol in 1843 and performed public readings while touring throughout England beginning in 1857 and in the U.S. from 1867-1868. The performance is given throughout the rooms of the main floor of Lyndhurst mansion. The readings will take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Friday, December 5 through Sunday, December 28 with additional performances on Monday, December 23 and Friday, December 26.

Historic Hudson Valley presents readings of the Christmas Carol. Nestle into the cozy confines of the Old Dutch Church and let master storyteller Jonathan Kruk, complete with musical accompaniment, regale his adaptation of this classic. Afterwards, enjoy complimentary admission to A Holiday Open House at Philipsburg Manor, just across the street, where visitors can browse through the museum shop and discover creative gifts for everyone on their list. The event will take place December 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21. Old Dutch Church is located at 42 North Broadway in Tarrytown. Parking is available at Philipsburg Manor located at Rte. 9 in Sleepy Hollow. Dinner and a Show
The classic ballet The Nutcracker, presented by the Westchester Ballet Company, will take place at the Westchester County Center December 19-21. Tickets are $17.50 to $27.50. This holiday season, be sure to take a breather from all the hustle and bustle and join Westchester Broadway Theatre for their very special holiday show “It Happened One Christmas Eve.” A heart-warming musical about an infant left on a Brooklyn doorstep one Christmas Eve and the magic she brings to the lives of those who find her. This show is filled with favorite Christmas carols and popular seasonal songs and is sure to please the entire family. A gala celebration is also in store on the eve of the New Year. A culinary feast, an astounding musical called “South Pacific,” dancing into the night and at the stroke of midnight, raise a glass of bubbly to the new year, full of new dreams and unexplored possibilities. The holiday season is a great time to take the family or a friend to a wonderful musical production. Start the holidays off right with the STAX of Soul experience at 12 Grapes Music & Wine Bar in Peekskill. STAX performs the sweet soul music of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, Sam and Dave, Booker T & the MGs, to name a few. All the musicians are top notch veterans, featuring powerhouse singer Julius Dilligard, Jr. who was lead vocalist with "Crown Heights Affair" and has appeared at the Apollo with such acts as The Commodores, Stylistics and more. The performance will take place on Saturday, December 13 at 9:30 p.m. Table seating is guaranteed for dinner patrons only. Diners keep their tables for the duration of the show.
