The KLA Schools Company will host an open house on Sat., Nov. 22, for parents of prospective preschool students from Coconut Creek and the surrounding areas of Parkland, Coral Springs and West Boca Raton.

“Our open houses are very beneficial for parents searching for the right preschool for their children because not only can they learn more about the Reggio Emilia approach and the programs we offer, but they can see our state-of-the art facilities,” said School Director Margarita Medina.

The event will be held between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m, and will include overviews of programs for infants through voluntary pre kindergarten (VPK) students. VPK is a state-led initiative to offer all 4-year-olds in Florida free pre K education, which has been shown to dramatically boost academic and social performance later in life.

This KLA School opened only about a year ago, and Medina says she and the teachers are eager to share the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach (which parents may be less familiar with than, for example, the Montessori or Waldorf systems).

“There is a lack of this type of education in Coconut Creek and the surrounding areas,” Medina explained. “These programs are different than those offered by other preschools.”

Reggio Emilia is built on a foundation of environmental stimulation, community and parental involvement, the “hundred languages” of expression (focusing on the different ways children share their thoughts and feelings), and long-term projects.
The approach is named after a city in northern Italy and was developed there by teacher Loris Malaguzzi and groups of parents for whom the tragedies of World War II prompted a new attitude toward early childhood education.

“We really want parents to come and enjoy a wonderful day with their children at KLA Schools, where they will be fully immersed in our approach to education,” Medina concluded.

The school is currently open for enrollment for classes starting in January of 2015. Additional open houses will be held Dec. 13 and Jan. 10, both from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
