One State Reveals Its Economic Losses from Substance Abuse
USA (PRWEB) November 20, 2014 -- We all know that drug and alcohol addiction represents a massive scourge on the economy. Not only does it cost taxpayers money to ensure that those affected get the treatment they deserve, but it represents lost earnings for employers (and their workers) too. And now, according to the Concord Monitor, New Hampshire has revealed exactly how much cash it lost owing to substance abuse in just 12 months: a cool $1.85 billion.
The shock statistic was released to reveal how much productivity goes to waste because of the recurring problem of addiction, and the extra pressure it adds to the healthcare network, the cops, and the courts. Vehicular damage has even been included in the final bill, because of the repair costs associated with DUIs where the driver is uninsured.
New Hampshire provided a breakdown of the figures in a press release. The cost to bosses where their workers don’t reach their full potential in a day's work comes in at nearly $1.1 billion. Meanwhile, the expense of covering for addicts who don't turn up to their jobs at all amounts to a further $67 million. Then, there's the $230.1 million price tag for medical costs – and this excludes any rehabilitative treatment that abusers might receive.
The report raises questions about whether the state is doing enough to tackle substance abuse altogether. There are also fears that other regions might be losing similar amounts of cash, meaning they too need to step up their game.
It remains unclear whether the figure has changed in recent years. These statistics are accurate as of 2012, and of course, 24 months has eloped since then. Critics are calling for higher taxation on alcohol products – or for existing revenue to be diverted – in order to help cure and prevent drug abuse from worsening in the immediate future.
