Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc Offers One of a Kind 'Design for Life' Program to Older Homeowners, Finishes New Home
Potomac, MD (PRWEB) November 21, 2014 -- Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc, a 37-year veteran of the home construction and home improvement industry, has seen plenty of uniquely challenging projects since it first opened its doors in 1977. Even so, one of Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc's recent projects, begun in September of 2013 and completed in mid 2014, had a unique set of problems to which the Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc team applied its usual creative approach.
An elderly client loved the house where she had been living for years but knew that her home as it was at present posed safety hazards. She wanted the ability to live entirely on her first floor, so having flush transitions without thresholds was a must; there could be no tripping hazard between rooms. Specifically, the client needed the three rooms adjacent to the home's main living space all of which had different floor heights made into one seamless whole. In order to calculate how much to raise each subfloor, and to ensure all new flooring would finish at the same level, precise measurements of the differences between the existing room levels, and the thickness of the new flooring and substrates had to be determined.
Using large format porcelain tiles in the bathroom and laundry room and beautiful white oak floorboards in the newly constructed bedroom, screened porch now transformed into a four season porch, and to replace the old hardwood in the main living space, the Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc team leveled the floors, and improved the aesthetic value of the home in the process.
Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc didn't stop there. By adding a two-zone split between the new four season porch and incorporating pocket doors to help separate the porch from the rest of the home when needed, Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc. ensured both the client's privacy and control of the heating and cooling of all of her new year round living space. The end result was a new, independent first floor that the client could enjoy and feel safe in. The client has now had a few months to enjoy the home and reports that everything is satisfactory.
Hopkins & Porter foresees that there will be many opportunities to help their clients address the needs of aging. Whether it is reduced vision, decreased muscle strength or endurance, reduced mental processing capabilities, increased risk of falls due to balance, increased risk of illness, reduced hearing, and decreased mobility, there are many ways and many types of budget to consider when modifying a home. It depends on the existing house and the specific needs of the clients.
Design for Life projects, like that which Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc recently finished, are so much more than just projects, says Todd McPhee, Coordinator of Special Projects with Hopkins & Porter Construction, Inc. “This project was more than just a project for us. By the time it was over, we had formed a very close bond with the client," says McPhee. "Although she knew she needed to have the work done in her home, it was an emotional experience for her. We had to tear up her hardwood floor, and I ended up building her a box out of the wood for her to keep, which I think she will always cherish. I can confidently say that she was very happy with the end result of the project.”
