School Staff Trained in Looking out for Drug Abuse in Young People
USA (PRWEB) November 20, 2014 -- Dozens of teachers and nurses have been trained on how they should be the first responders to the warning signs of substance abuse in young people. They received perspectives on the damage that addiction can do from nurses, doctors, policemen and victims who have taken heroin in the past.
The event was brought together as education professionals warned that they weren't being given enough information on the best ways to prevent and tackle drug abuse in the local area. In Bergen County, North Jersey, where the meeting took place, the number of deaths from overdoses has doubled in the past year alone.
There are now hopes that this initiative will be rolled out nationally, with a view to stopping young people from falling into the traps that drug abuse provides.
Parents of those who have died from drug overdoses in the past also warned that many people can be lured into a trap of thinking it would never happen to their children, and then being unsure how to tackle the problem once it becomes a reality.
During shocking speeches, teachers were told how students are forced to get creative in order to store their drugs on school grounds. Water bottles and Coke cans are just some of the receptacles that have been used in the past to stow pills and powders.
One counselor warned: "Our kids are suffering, and not just in high school. I have dealt with kindergartners who have said they are going to hurt themselves."
The shocking report appeared on NewJersey.com, and the overall message was focused on intervening with suspect cases of adolescent drug abuse as early as possible.
More schools are scheduled to participate in the training sessions throughout the month, making the most of the time that education professionals spend with the children they serve on a daily basis.
