Once your LTV reaches 80 percent, and you've carried your PMI for at least five years, you can get out of PMI. Because a majority of home values have increased significantly over the past three to five years, homeowners might not be required to make PMI payments any longer."

Besides potentially eliminating PMI and also refinancing their mortgage into a loan with a lower interest rate, Mr. Ruedy explained to viewers that a refinance may allow homeowners to take advantage of the equity they have in their home.
