Aegon retirement research findings show that while women are successfully closing the gender gap in some areas of their lives, they are less prepared than men for retirement. Aegon cites different working patterns and extra child care responsibilities as causes that prevent women from better preparing for retirement.

An Aegon retirement research report states that only 20% of women feel they are on track to achieve their retirement income and 40% of women surveyed don't know if they can achieve their retirement income goals.

A recent Aegon retirement research report states only 20% of women feel they are on track to achieve their retirement income and 40% of women surveyed don't know if they can achieve their retirement income goals. On the heels of this report, it is important to talk about tools that they can use to grow their retirement accounts. Many American IRA clients have taken their small retirement accounts (sometimes as little as $6,800) and grown those accounts to 6 figures (in one case $293,000 in just 5 years).

Self-Directed IRA accounts allow people to invest in what they know and understand. While many people are passionate about an investment type or an asset group, they seldom realize that they can use their retirement accounts to purchase those investments and assets tax-free or tax-deferred. Women reading this everywhere can quickly realize that means a significant tax savings which they can keep in their retirement account...the very same money that they are currently handing over to the government can instead stay in their retirement accounts. The percentage of savings really depends upon an individual's tax bracket.

While the Aegon retirement research report states that positive retirement aspirations for women are undermined by lifestyle differences. This doesn't have to be so. Self-Directed IRAs can be utilized by 'everyone'.

Further the Aegon retirement research report states that a quarter (24%) of women associate retirement with insecurity and 18% associate retirement with poverty. The fact is that if people do not take action to build their retirement accounts, they will retire in poverty. According to the Social Security Administration, the average social security check in 2014 is $1,294 per month. That is $15,528 per year. That is just under $4,000 more than poverty for a single person in 2014 as defined by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
