In order shed light on the importance of spinal health during the holidays, Houston Neuro & Spine Surgery is providing information on the effects of adult spinal deformity. The neurosurgical care center can provide patients with a treatment plan if they are suffering from adult spinal deformity.
As people age, degenerative changes occur in everyone; often one will see a loss of lordosis of the lumbar spine (straightening of the lumbar spine). When this change occurs, it causes the head to move forward and places it in a positive or anterior position in relationship with the pelvis. The body will compensate for this with a retroversion (backward tilting of the pelvis) which places the head back over the pelvis.
This compensated position may last but usually further forward bending of the spine overwhelms the correction and the head will move forward and end up in front of the pelvis. Every effort should be made to prevent the final outcome, which has a retroverted pelvis with the head well forward of the pelvis causing marked deformity.
Although not all adult spinal deformity cases require treatment, patients suffering from the condition should be evaluated by a professional to determine if surgery or other treatment options are necessary. Patients should contact Dr. Robert Levinthal at 713.533.0100 for more information or for treatment plans.
