EWI is pleased to announce that Jerry Gould, Technology Leader for EWI’s Resistance and Solid State Welding group, has been selected as this year’s Elihu Thomson Resistance Welding Award recipient. The annual award for outstanding contribution to the technology and application of resistance welding was presented to Jerry by the Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance at the FABTECH AWS Award Ceremony in Atlanta, November 11th.

“We’re so pleased to see Jerry’s work recognized by his peers in the resistance welding manufacturing community,” said Henry Cialone, President and CEO of EWI. “His contributions to the field over the past 30 years have been truly significant, and we’re sure there’s more to come from him in the next 30.”

Jerry, who has been with EWI since its founding in the mid-1980s, focuses on resistance spot welding, particularly of advanced high-strength steel and aluminum sheet. More recently, he has focused on dissimilar metals joining and development of new generation resistance welding processes. His research includes seam welding, projection welding, flash welding, resistance butt welding, and friction welding. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the field of resistance and solid state welding including the award of six patents and the publication of more than 140 technical papers. In addition, Jerry has authored or co-authored 20 EWI Cooperative Research Reports.

The Elihu Thomson Award is sponsored by the Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance (RWMA) and was formulated in 1985 during the RWMA’s 50th anniversary to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the invention of resistance welding. It is awarded annually to a living individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the technology and application of resistance welding.
