Cancer Research Foundation Awards $9 Million to Research Against Deadly Cancer
Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) November 29, 2014 -- Earlier this month, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) reached $9 million in funded research. The Meso Foundation follows a rigorous, peer-review protocol, administered by its Science Advisory Board, and funds only the highest quality of mesothelioma research, with the goal of eradicating mesothelioma as a life-ending cancer.
Since 2000, the Meso Foundation has funded 94 research projects, resulting in over 180 published studies in scientific journals.
“The impact of this Foundation’s work is impressive, and the numbers really speak for themselves” said Melinda Kotzian, chief executive officer of the Meso Foundation. “We are very proud of our work, and that motivates us to move as fast as we can toward our goal to eradicate mesothelioma as a life-ending cancer.”
Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the lining of the lung, abdomen, or heart known to be caused by exposure to asbestos. With the life expectancy of less than one year after diagnosis, medical experts consider it one of the most aggressive and deadly of all cancers. An estimated one-third of those who develop mesothelioma were exposed while serving in the Navy or working in shipyards. Currently, few treatment options exist. There is no cure.
The Meso Foundation's peer-reviewed grant program provides a competitive un-biased process for selecting, awarding and overseeing mesothelioma research projects. Each year the Meso Foundation calls for proposals to be examined and critiqued by the organization's Science Advisory Board.
The Foundation requires numerous reports and updates throughout the life of the project, both during and after the grant award term. Each report is evaluated by the chair of the Science Advisory Board and the executive director before a subsequent payment is made.
A list of grant recipients and projects is available on the Meso Foundation’s website.
