StreamScale Announces Settlement of Erasure Code Technology Patent Litigation
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 03, 2014 -- StreamScale, a leading developer providing technology to protect storage systems from data loss and corruption, announced today that it has entered into an agreement which ends all litigation between StreamScale and James S. Plank, Ph.D, a leading academic researcher of Erasure Coding and Galois Field Arithmetic for storage applications. Both parties express regret for any misunderstandings that may have given rise to this litigation.
As part of that agreement, Dr. Plank’s GF-Complete and Jerasure versions 2.0 and later are no longer supported. StreamScale continues to offer a commercial erasure code solution. StreamScale asserts that the use of GF-Complete (particularly as part of Jerasure 2.0 or later) or any similar software, method or code for erasure coding infringes on StreamScale's issued United States Patent No. 8,683,296. Dr. Plank offers no representations or warranties in general about StreamScale's products and expresses no opinion on StreamScale's claim, but Dr. Plank advises that parties should be aware that StreamScale asserts such claims.
"We are pleased to reach an amicable agreement," said Michael H. Anderson, president and CEO, StreamScale. "We are proud of our innovations in accelerated erasure coding systems and are committed to protecting our intellectual property. Dr. Plank’s academic research and contributions to erasure coding and Galois field arithmetic make him a leader in this field and was a logical person to contract to aid us in evaluating our technology. We are grateful for his efforts."
"I have verified that StreamScale's solution is faster than GF-Complete or Jerasure in some respects," said Dr. Plank. "This agreement will allow us each to direct our resources to new innovations."
Concluded Anderson, "This agreement is an important step to continue our development of commercial solutions that implement erasure coding technology – not as a patent holding company, but as the original inventor of the patent. In addition to the first patent that has been issued, we have received a Notice of Allowance for the second patent which will issue shortly, and a third patent which has also been filed."
