Dr. Jerald D. Wishner to Present “Next Evolution in Robot-Assisted Colorectal Surgery” at Executive Conference
Westchester County, New York (PRWEB) December 03, 2014 -- Northern Westchester Hospital announced today that Jerald D. Wishner, MD, FACS, FASCRS, Co-Director of the Institute for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery and Medical Director of the Colorectal Surgery Program will be presenting on advanced robot-assisted colorectal surgery techniques. The conference will focus on the clinical and economic value of da Vinci Surgery and is being hosted by Intuitive Surgical on December 4, 2014 in New York City.
Dr. Wishner is the first surgeon in the region to perform advanced robot-assisted procedures for patients requiring colon resection for both benign and malignant disease. Northern Westchester Hospital is a designated observation training facility and surgeons are traveling from across the United States to observe Dr. Wishner perform these leading-edge procedures.
“This advanced technology is enhancing the skills of highly-trained surgeons by providing greater visualization and dexterity when performing minimally invasive procedures,” stated Dr. Wishner. “We are now able to perform procedures through smaller incisions and with less trauma to our patients. This approach results in smaller scars, less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, and in many cases a faster recovery.”
Surgeons at Northern Westchester Hospital perform the highest volume of robot-assisted surgeries in the region utilizing two da Vinci robotic surgical systems. The hospital’s multispecialty robotics program includes expertise in colorectal, urology, gynecology, oncology, and general surgical procedures. Robot assisted surgery requires a great deal of training. In addition to learning by observing surgical cases at Northern Westchester Hospital, surgeons are able to utilize a training simulator to master various robotic surgery techniques. This system works similarly to a flight simulator that pilots use when training to fly jet airplanes. The device simulates a surgical environment, enabling surgeons to gain greater familiarity with instrumentation and perfect the skills necessary to meet the stringent requirements for performing robot-assisted surgery.
