Blanco, popularly known throughout the soccer world simply as Raúl, recently signed a multi-year contract to join the Cosmos beginning with the 2015 North American Soccer League (NASL) season. ONE World Sports’ live coverage offers fans their first opportunity to see Raul talk about his much-anticipated arrival at the iconic soccer team.
Raúl led the famed Spanish club Real Madrid, over his 16 years there, to six La Liga titles, four Spanish Super Cups and three UEFA Champions League titles. He left Real Madrid in 2010 as the team’s all-time leading goal scorer, moving to German club FC Schalke 04, for which he scored 40 goals in 98 total matches, leading the Bundesliga team to the UEFA Champions League semifinal in 2011, before departing for Al-Sadd Sports Club in 2012. He debuted for the Spanish national team in 1996, serving as its captain from 2002 to 2006, and participated in three FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championship tournaments with Spain.
Raúl’s professional accomplishments are legendary. His 228 goals in La Liga are a Real Madrid record and the fourth highest total all-time in Spanish league history; he was awarded the Don Balón award for best Spanish player in La Liga a record five times; entering the 2014-15 season, he was the all-time leading goal scorer in UEFA Champions League history; he was awarded the UEFA Best Forward of the Year Award a record three times; and his 44 goals over 10 years with the Spanish national team marked the second-most in team history.
The Cosmos re-launched in 2013 following a three-decade hiatus, going on to win the 2013 NASL championship.
