NEW YORK (PRWEB) December 08, 2014
Grooveshark, the leading streaming audio platform for content creators, listeners, and tastemakers, today announced the impending launch of a new standalone social music service called Broadcasts. The new service will launch in the US in January 2015 with an app for iOS and Android devices, providing access to the top internet radio DJs and artist broadcasts from around the world. Broadcasts will be the industry’s first social radio app to provide a streamlined listening experience combined with real-time chat with broadcasters, friends and fellow listeners.
The new standalone app will launch outside of the existing popular Grooveshark.com platform. Unlike Grooveshark.com, which provides an on-demand streaming service that directly licenses content from thousands of labels, this new social radio service operates with a single industry-wide license as a SoundExchange-compliant radio app. This comprehensive license ensures that Broadcasts will provide direct revenue for artists and labels through SoundExchange starting on day one.
“Grooveshark has always been all about connecting people through music, and this app will allow us to take that to the next level,” said Sam Tarantino, Grooveshark’s CEO and Co-Founder. “Thanks to the industry-wide licensing and royalty collection process offered by SoundExchange, we’re able to create and deliver the best social radio app in the industry without the complexity of direct licensing from thousands of individual content owners. When we launch this app, artists and labels will begin collecting new revenues from SoundExchange immediately.”
Unlike other music listening apps, Broadcasts is a social radio platform, in which stations are created by people rather than algorithms, and in which users can chat while listening to music together in a premium ad-free environment. The app will offer unlimited ad-free access to a growing number of available Broadcasts for an introductory rate of 99¢-per-month, or the same monthly price as a single song download.
“We believe the offerings provided by traditional internet radio services are bogged down by ads and offer a poor user experience,” said Josh Greenberg, Grooveshark’s CTO and Co-Founder. “We’re capitalizing on that by offering a premium ad-free music experience everyone can afford and enjoy. The industry needs a fun, human-curated internet radio experience that is worth paying for, so that’s what we’re delivering.”
