Today Akademos appointed Jonathan Shar as chief marketing officer, strengthening its executive team and providing for the rapid expansion of its virtual bookstore business.
“Our evolving story of student savings and faculty service is resonating with colleges across the country who understand the effects that high textbook costs are having on student performance,” said John Squires, CEO of Akademos. “Jonathan’s nearly 20 years of marketing experience will expand this story and communicate the value of working with Akademos to new schools. We’re also eager to tap Jonathan’s direct marketing expertise to improve student success at our 120 partner schools, including John Jay College, Roanoke College and the City Colleges of Chicago. Finally, Jonathan’s recent work with the Nook will help us strengthen our digital library and product development plans.”
Shar previously served as General Manager of Barnes & Noble’s NOOK digital content business, where he was responsible for the newsstand, video and application businesses. Prior to his nearly five years with NOOK, Shar was the SVP and General Manager of CNNMoney; the web and mobile financial information and business news services site that was a joint venture between Time Inc. and CNN. His early career was within the consumer marketing division of Time Inc., where he rose to the position of Vice President of Consumer Marketing for Sports Illustrated.
“This is a great opportunity for me to help Akademos make a difference in the cost of educating hundreds of thousands of students nationwide,” said Shar. “I’m excited by the passion and strength of the Akademos team and I’m looking forward to bringing my experience to grow the number of colleges and universities that understand the unique value Akademos can bring to students and faculty.”
Jonathan received his MBA from the University of Michigan in 1995 and his BA from Tufts University in 1991. He resides with his family in Chappaqua, NY.
