The annual Salary Survey, which is now in its fourth year, is an example of how the recruiters provide an extra dimension to their service, allowing IP professionals gain a clearer idea of market activity in relation to current salary averages. Michele Fellows has been the curator of the survey for the past three years and had this to say, “Although the role of the patent and trade mark attorney is quite defined when it comes to their responsibilities, it can be a different story when it comes to predicting their salaries. Most attorneys will remain in their first role throughout qualification, which makes it quite difficult for them to understand their market worth. More experienced professionals may also have less of an idea due to the internal politics of certain firms skewing the average. The current demand for a particular technical discipline may also ignite an increase for some attorneys, whereas lack of activity for others can cause their salaries to remain in a stalemate. We hope that the Salary Survey will shed some light for professionals and be a guiding light in a somewhat uncertain market”.
The Salary Survey has been launched via an on line survey provider and is in partnership with the Patent Lawyer magazine. It is hoped that the survey is seen as an extension of the informed advice that the team already provides all year round. “For us it is has always been about the long term commitment to our clients and candidates. We may keep in touch over months if not years before any activity occurs, whether it is a role requirement from a client or a candidate deciding to make a move” explains consultant Phillipa Field. “We would rather be seen as a source of information and sounding board than a company that is purely motivated by their own gains, and we like to think that the Salary Survey supports this”.
The survey is currently live and the Fellows and Associates team is encouraging as many IP professionals as possible to get involved. “We saw a significant increase in participants in 2014 compared to 2013 and we’re hoping for an increase again this year due to the overwhelming support we have had to continue with the survey. It goes without saying that the more data we collect the more accurate the results will be and so we are hopeful for a record number of responses!”
