SaltStack Delivers More Automation for Docker and LXC Application Containers
Salt Lake City (PRWEB) December 09, 2014 -- SaltStack, the creators of software to automate cloud infrastructure operations, today announced the new SaltStack 2014.7 release includes more automation for the latest versions of Docker and LXC application containers. The new SaltStack application container support now includes management of networked containers adding to existing SaltStack automation for heterogeneous container deployment and management at scale across any cloud or infrastructure.
“SaltStack was built to be the event-driven orchestration engine for the ubiquitous, general-purpose cloud,” said Thomas Hatch, SaltStack CTO and co-founder. “We provide a data center infrastructure management platform for all the things because data centers are extremely diverse. Today SaltStack is used to manage any cloud, infrastructure, operating system, application, or code. We continue to expand our substantial orchestration support for Docker and LXC application container technologies and we will support other containers like CoreOS Rocket to help IT operations organizations avoid the container version of VM sprawl.”
SaltStack users manage and orchestrate application containers in production today. For example:
- Love Nyberg of Bloglovin uses SaltStack for rolling Docker deployments
- Chris Reeves of SOON_ shares how they use SaltStack and Docker to re-launch and run http://www.do-it.org.uk
The SaltStack 2014.7 release includes the following new support for application containers:
- Salt Mine delivers a data store for application containers including network info and ports;
- SaltStack can define and track CPU parameters for hosts running Docker containers;
- New Salt execution modules and states to call Docker load and save and to install a Docker image from a tar file;
- SaltStack Runner support to create an LXC cloud;
- Salt Cloud bootstrap support for installing SaltStack on an LXC container;
- Support for the latest Docker releases.
Nicole Thomas, SaltStack engineer, wrote a tutorial to explain how SaltStack can be used to manage Docker at scale on any infrastructure or cloud. The article provides a step-by-step guide to implementing a simple SaltStack and Docker environment used to run a PHP application with HAProxy and Apache. With this setup, information about each Docker container IP address and exposed port can be easily obtained and used for production-ready, real-world orchestration. A video demo, showing hundreds of containers under management, and the tutorial are both available from this blog post titled, “Using SaltStack in production to manage Docker application containers.”
SaltConf15
SaltConf, the annual SaltStack user conference, is coming back to Salt Lake City from March 3-5, 2015. The SaltConf15 call for speakers is open now through Dec. 12. Registration is also open and early-bird and group discounts are still available. SaltConf15 pre-conference training courses will sell out.
