Linda Meek Continues Husband’s Work to Honor Him and Help Others
Harrisburg, PA (PRWEB) December 10, 2014 -- When Linda Pierson first met Hazen Meek at an amusement park, it was love at first sight. Hazen was a custom candle maker and played in a rock ‘n’ roll band.
“I knew Hazen was really something as soon as he walked by my photo booth. It was love at first sight. I never even wanted to get married until I met him,” said Linda, who went on to become Mrs. Meek. “It didn’t hurt that he also very handsome.”
Unfortunately, after getting married, Hazen suffered his first stroke. Strokes are the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. according to the National Stroke Association. In spite of the stroke, Hazen’s mind was strong and his attitude was unrelentingly positive. When things started looking worse, they began writing their combined memoir of the events, which is titled “Giving Up Is Not an Option.”
Even after three strokes, he graduated from a difficult computer course. Even after his left side became paralyzed, he was still taking motorcycle lessons. The only thing that could stop Hazen was Hazen. His almost-quixotic positivity kept them both alive.
“There was a huge range of emotions and learning experiences that we wanted to share with anyone who might later go through what happened to us… caregiver or patient,” Linda said.
The skinny memoir packs a punch. There are moments that are both hilarious and dark, balancing the weight of their stories on a counterpoint of love, affection and teamwork. Through it all—the cancer, strokes, heart attack, surgeries and frustrating caregivers—one always dragged the other through. They reminded each other that giving up is not an option.
