Despite strong growth, companies are shifting their focus to web and digital formats

Despite the growing popularity of online streaming content, the Fitness DVD Production industry has been in great shape during the past five years. Many Americans have continually opted to use cheaper fitness programs offered by DVDs rather than use comparably pricey gyms during the recession. Despite strong growth, companies in the Fitness DVD Production industry are shifting their focus as competition from other electronic media erodes the potential growth for physical products. Two of the three major companies, Gaiam and Lionsgate, have undergone substantial restructuring efforts to introduce streaming fitness videos to consumers via the internet. Although electronic publication is forecast to expand rapidly in the next five years, IBISWorld expects that the market for fitness DVDs will be generally robust among its older clientele.
The number of production companies is projected to grow in 2019. “As the number of external competitors grow, competition is expected to escalate and hamper revenue growth,” says Petrillo. Industry revenue growth is forecast to slow by 2019. The industry's success is contingent on its customers continuing to purchase fitness DVDs over streaming content and gym memberships. As a result, the industry's products are most frequently targeted toward older consumers, those who are not familiar with or who do not wish to exercise at a membership, those who do not use streaming services to view exercise programs and those who are seeking a cheaper alternative to common gym memberships.
