ATRS Delivers Upcycled Pet Quilts to Michigan Humane Society for the Holidays
Lansing, MI (PRWEB) December 15, 2014 -- American Textile Recycling Service (ATRS) employees delivered beautiful upcycled quilts to Michigan Humane Society rescue animals this week just in time for the holidays. The cozy covers were made from hand drawn quilt patches designed by school kids at Michigan Earth Day back in April. Each one was uniquely assembled from recycled materials and sewn by a local quilter.
The process began months ago at the DEQ sponsored Earth Day which drew approximately 500 children from school districts statewide. Students stopped by the ATRS crafting table to learn about the importance of recycling, reusing and repurposing their clothing, shoes and household textiles. The kids then created a unique quilting patch by hand drawing their favorite pet, a family scene or anything else they thought the Michigan Humane Society pets would enjoy. The squares were precut from chairs covers donated to ATRS for recycling.
JoAnn's Fabric Store in Jackson, MI provided crafting supplies like fabric markers, scissors and other tools. ATRS employees used the store facility to cut and prepare the quilting squares for the Earth Day crafting event. Local quilter Mellisa Gondek stepped in and volunteered months of her time to sort through the thousands of squares and produced 30 upcycled quilts of various sizes for the many pets awaiting forever homes this holiday season.
"It was fun to have the children do something caring and responsible for the rescue animals and learn about sustainability at the same time. I hope we can do this every year!" says Nicole Senczyszyn, Event Manager, Michigan Humane Society. "The quilts were put together perfectly and the animals love them!"
The entire project was spearheaded by ATRS community advocates in the Jackson, MI facility who conceived the green gifting idea and personally delivered the quilts this past week. It was an amazing community collaboration from start to finish that involved area businesses, families and green-minded students.
