When my mother passed away earlier this year, I was left with a huge void . . . I’ve found the best way to fill that void is through creativity, especially by artistically reflecting the importance of the person who once occupied that emotional spot.

Author, journalist and Tennessee educator Alex Beene has released the book “Lessons from a Southern Mother” in hardback and digital format. The book focuses on advice from a mother to her son who is nervously beginning his first day of kindergarten. As she shares wisdom to reassure him, she highlights some of the outstanding people, moments and places of the South. In addition to Southern heritage, the book illustrates how treating people with love and kindness will bring an even more outstanding future.
In discussing reasons for writing “Lessons from a Southern Mother,” Beene commented, “When my mother passed away earlier this year, I was left with a huge void in my personal life. I’ve found the best way to fill that void is through creativity, especially by artistically reflecting the importance of the person who once occupied that emotional spot. I began bouncing around ideas for a children’s book that would list some great lessons a mother would teach a son growing up in the South; within a few weeks, the project took off.” The book includes references to Memphis, New Orleans, Savannah, Oxford and more Southern locales.
Danny Martin of Austin, Texas, created rich illustrations for the book, and Hilliard Press published it through Oxford University. “Lessons from a Southern Mother” is one of a handful of children’s books officially registered in Oxford University’s historic campus library in 2014.
Available through Amazon, “Lessons from a Southern Mother” also can be purchased at 60 retailers in more than 170 countries. In addition to the standard edition, three bilingual versions are available for early language learners; they include English/Spanish, English/Chinese and English/Japanese.
Certified by the University of California – Los Angeles in English as a Second Language instruction, Beene has traveled to more than 20 countries. He was named one of the Top 40 under 40 Leaders in West Tennessee by The Jackson Sun and serves as a life and academic coach. Beene contributes to projects that promote community development and the arts, and his work has been featured in various publications throughout the Southeastern United States. He received a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from the University of Mississippi.
