Unidesk Corporation today announced that the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM), which welcomed its inaugural class in August 2013, has successfully deployed Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) to seamlessly support bring your own device (BYOD) and deliver a continuous learning – and teaching – experience. The solution, comprised of Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix NetScaler, Dell server and storage infrastructure and Unidesk virtual desktop management software, provides the technology foundation necessary to help ACOM’s students become the best doctors, while increasing the productivity of the college’s faculty and staff.

“Our goal is to educate and prepare our students for successful careers in osteopathic medicine,” said John Abraham, Manager of Information Systems at ACOM. “To do that, we need to offer the most innovative learning environment possible. With third and fourth year students in the field instead of in classrooms, VDI offers a mobile, collaborative experience and a new standard of learning, while minimizing the time and effort we have to spend on desktop and application delivery.”

ACOM now has more than 400 virtual desktops deployed across the college. The combined solution offers full mobility and BYOD flexibility, and supports high definition video and a broad portfolio of applications, including Adobe Pro, Visual Studio, Office 2013, Autodesk Viewer 2014, Ellucian PowerCampus, TurningPoint Student Clicker, Google Picasa, and Avigilon Control Center.

The Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) is a comprehensive, four-year osteopathic medical college located in Dothan, Alabama. ACOM, the academic division of the Houston County Health Care Authority, is the first osteopathic medical college in Alabama and the third medical school in the state. The college is affiliated with Southeast Alabama Medical Center (SAMC) in Dothan, a 420-bed regional medical center. SAMC serves more than 600,000 residents in a 75-mile radius and has more than 2,500 employees and an active medical staff of 300.
