According to HealthDay News in the article U.S. Doctors Cutting Back on Painkiller Prescriptions: Study(12/8) 90% of doctors have concerns about the increasing rates of prescription drug abuse in their local communities. Among all the drug problems, prescription drug abuse is one issue that is growing at a rapid pace.
Drug abuse is rising day by day, and doctors have started to show their concerns over the matter. 50% of them also said that they will be prescribing powerful painkillers to a fewer number of people than compared to the figures of past year.
The survey took responses from 580 doctors and general physicians in the country. According to 85% of the respondents, narcotic painkillers are being used more than necessary, which is leading to a rise in addiction, traffic violations, and deaths. 50% of the doctors expressed their concerns over this.
So are the doctors at fault or is just the public misusing the prescriptions? 90% of the doctors are confident about the drugs they prescribe. Where are things going wrong then? It is probably the fact that these drugs are over relied for treatment was the opinion of Dr G Caleb Alexander who works as an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Epidemiology. Dr Alexander went on to say that the healthcare community could be blamed for the problem, but he also stated that they were the solution as well.
Drug abuse can be reduced if not stopped. Doctors should start availing non narcotic treatments which include massage, physical therapy, and acupuncture.
In the year 2012, prescription narcotics resulted in over 38,000 deaths due to drug abuse. If the doctors do not do something about the situation right now, the numbers will become even more alarming in the time to come.
