Cancer Survivor ‘Adopted’ to Receive Christmas Gifts This Season
LAS VEGAS (PRWEB) December 16, 2014 -- For many, the holiday season is a time to celebrate family, friends and even an occasional Black Friday department store sale. But for June Brown-Hawes, 60, it is a time to celebrate life.
Brown-Hawes was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in August and underwent a mastectomy on her right breast to remove the tumor. After follow-up radiation treatment, the only gift she planned to have was her health this holiday season. But, a local nonprofit organization will be providing Brown-Hawes and her family with gifts that she would otherwise never have been able to afford.
This year, Brown-Hawes and her family were selected for the “Adopt a Family For Christmas” program by Amazing Acts of Kindness (AAOK), a local nonprofit group dedicated to helping the community provide gifts for those in need during the holidays. Brown-Hawes lives in Las Vegas with Rudolph, her husband of 45 years, and she has seven children and 26 grandchildren.
“It has been a journey, but I’ve made it,” said Brown-Hawes. “I’m still here and feel blessed just to be able to spend this Christmas with my family. I was shocked when I heard the news that we were going to be receiving such a wonderful gift. No one has ever nominated me for anything.”
Brown-Hawes was nominated for the AAOK Adopt a Family program by two employees at 21st Century Oncology. A local family has adopted the Brown-Hawes and are providing them with wrapped presents to enjoy this Christmas.
“We have been able to see AAOK's Christmas outreach touch the lives of those in need, including June Brown-Hawes and her family, here in Las Vegas,” said Brian Golbourne, co-founder of AAOK. “We are bringing Christmas to more than 125 families this year and none of this would be possible without the help of complete strangers spending their time and money on other strangers to make the city a better place.”
“I was so pleasantly surprised that I was nominated by 21st Century Oncology and I am so thankful that they thought of us during this season,” says Brown-Hawes. “My family and I can’t wait to meet those who will be giving so much this Christmas.”
