Series strives to bring intellectually stimulating speakers and inspiring leaders to the Frederick community

Frederick Speaker Series

When it began two years ago, the Frederick Speaker Series had one goal: to bring intellectually stimulating speakers and inspiring leaders to the Frederick community. Now entering its third season, the series continues its commitment to this mission and is set to open on Friday, January 16, with Oscar®-winning actress, New York Times Best-selling author, activist and fitness expert Jane Fonda.

Tickets for the speaking engagements are available either individually or for a discounted subscription rate. All series events are held at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Downtown Frederick, Md.

The 2015 lineup includes:

  •     Jane Fonda—January 16, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.
  •     Dave Barry—February 11, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.
  •     General Stanley McChrystal—March 11, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.
  •     Dr. Michio Kaku—April 15, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.

A separately ticketed meet-and-greet reception will take place immediately following each on-stage presentation. These exclusive events provide a chance for fans to meet the speakers, obtain autographs and more. One hundred percent of the proceeds from these receptions will benefit children’s programs at Frederick County Public Libraries.

Fonda's work on stage and screen has earned numerous nominations and awards, including the Oscar® Awards for Best Actress in 1971 for Klute and in 1978 for Coming Home, and an Emmy® for her performance in The Dollmaker. Fonda is also well-known for home exercise videos, 13 audio recordings, and five books–selling 17 million copies all together.

Dave Barry is known for a newspaper column that appeared in more than 500 newspapers, during which time he received the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. He has written more than 30 books, including the novels Big Trouble, Tricky Business, Lunatics and, most recently, Insane City.

General Stanley McChrystal is the former commander of U.S. and international forces in Afghanistan and the former leader of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). He is the author of the best-selling leadership book, My Share of the Task: A Memoir.

Dr. Michio Kaku is an internationally recognized authority in two areas. The first is Einstein’s unified field theory, which Dr. Kaku is attempting to complete. The other is to predict trends affecting business, commerce, and finance based on the latest research in science. He has written three New York Times Best Sellers, and has 2.3 million Facebook fans and over 330,000 followers on Twitter.

This year's sponsors include: C. Burr Artz Trust, Ausherman Family Foundation, Leidos, Frederick County Bank, Delaplaine Foundation, PNC Foundation, Graphcom/Frederick Gorilla, Frederick Magazine, and The Frederick News-Post.
