Homeowners Should Check Water Heaters Before 2015 DOE Standards Change
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. (PRWEB) December 17, 2014 -- The Department of Energy has announced new efficiency standards for residential water heaters in 2015. In the new year, if your water heater needs replacing, it may require a more costly unit than previously thought because of the new efficiency requirements.
“Replacing a water heater is something many homeowners put off, but now is the time to do it,” said Mike Agugliaro, co-owner of Gold Medal Service, an award winning HVAC, plumbing and electrical home service business. “If your water heater is more than 10 years old, I recommend having it inspected. It may be time to consider purchasing a new water heater unit before the new mandates go into effect. It will save you money in the long run.”
The water heaters affected will vary depending on size and fuel source, but there are adjustments that will have to be made for some gas-fired, oil-fired and electrical heaters. The new standards will officially go into effect on April 16, 2015.
“Most likely, the new water heaters will require more insulation, which means it could take up more space than your current unit,” said Agugliaro. “This could mean having to completely move your water heater to a different location in the house. To save space, I definitely suggest investing in a tankless water heater, which is much more compact. It already meets the new energy standards and because of its efficiency it will also save you money.”
