Any entity processing a credit or debit card will be responsible for the financial repercussions if they experience a data breach and have not upgraded to chip and PIN technology (also known as EMV, named for developers Europay, MasterCard and Visa), which have an embedded microprocessor chip that encrypts data differently for each transaction. EMV is widely used in Europe and Asia and is steadily being adopted as the standard type of card processing worldwide.
