Examining the Premise of Revenge Porn Laws, NoBullying Article in the Spotlight Today
London, UK (PRWEB) December 19, 2014 -- California had its first revenge porn sentencing this year, but is it a stray case or are more arrests expected? NoBullying examines, in an article in the spotlight today, whether these laws in the United States are futile attempts in curbing harassment, discrimination and hostility against women.
Back in October 2013, California passed its own revenge porn statute, which makes it a misdemeanor to distribute nude or explicit images of someone without their permission. In August 2014, lawmakers expanded the scope of the law to include posting compromising selfies which was a big flaw in the original statute.
According to this source published by the BBC in 2014, a man, 26, was sentenced to a year in jail and three years of probation after a jury found him guilty of two violations of a restraining order and a misdemeanor violation of California’s “revenge porn” statute.
The man had used a fake Facebook account to post a compromising photo of his ex-girlfriend along with comments that describe her in shameful terms and pleading with her employer to fire her.
Revenge porn is defined as the posting of sexually explicit photographs or videos of people online without their consent, even if the photograph itself was taken with consent. A scorned lover, husband or boyfriend looks for revenge by submitting photos and videos to websites. Many websites exist for this specific type of purpose and usually charge nothing for uploading photos but charge a high fee to have the images or videos removed. These websites leave women feeling humiliated and devastated.
Most of these hideous websites are anonymous, but most allow the submitted porn to include personal information like full names and social media sites allowing people to find and potentially stalk the victim whose pictures where unknowingly posted to these sites. Several groups and activists are now in action to protect and aid women in ridding themselves from the many dangers of stalking due to this type of postings.
The spread of this trend has also led to the coinage of other terms, such as ‘Instagram porn’ and ‘Twitter Porn’, denoting how where social media is used to spread photos and rumors about clueless women which results in devastating outcomes on all fronts.
Ciaran Connolly, Co Founder of NoBullying says “These women lose so much more than a failed relationship once a man decides to reveal these photos on websites designed to expose innocent women. This is a scary trend that doesn't seem to going away sadly.”
He added that parents and teachers should make a point to educate the younger generations about the sad outcome of all kinds of violence and bullying. According to Connolly, it is quite imperative to press for more firm laws condemning all acts of bullying and harassment.
