Quarterback Cam Newton Injured in Car Accident: Herb Auger Weighs in on the Possible Consequences
CHARLOTTE, NC (PRWEB) December 30, 2014 -- Quarterback Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers was seriously injured in a car accident last week. Attorney Herb Auger of Auger & Auger says that the costs of his injuries could be much higher than just his medical bills.
Newtown was driving near the Panthers’ stadium when he was hit. Police say he was obeying the speed limit and wearing a seat belt, according to ESPN (published 12.10.2014). The accident caused two fractures in his lower back, hospitalizing him for days.
“This is the kind of injury that can ruin a football player’s career,” Auger said. “We’re all hoping Cam can return to play but that doesn’t mean he’ll ever fully recover.”
Auger says that makes a big difference from a legal standpoint.
“Normally, the driver who causes an accident is liable for the costs of that accident,” Auger said. “Those costs usually involve car damages, medical bills, and perhaps some lost work time.”
But when the victim is a professional athlete, he says the picture gets more complicated.
“The damage to Newton’s career isn’t as simple as how many games he misses this season,” he said. “Injuring a football player’s back is like injuring a pianist’s fingers. It affects their livelihood for life.”
Police say that the other driver pulled out in front of Newton, effectively causing the accident. But Auger emphasizes that just because that driver is at fault does not mean Newton will file suit.
“It’s always worth it to talk to a lawyer after an accident,” Auger said. “The insurance company will seldom offer you everything you’re owed unless you have representation.”
