Several lives in the Phenix Salon family were impacted forever when the CBS hit reality series, “Undercover Boss,” stepped into their salons in the spring of 2014 with Phenix Salons Founder and President Gina Rivera visiting them in disguise.

“It was an honor to meet and see the Salon Professionals working in Phenix Salons,” said Rivera. “Like most everyone else in America, I’d seen ‘Undercover Boss’ before, but getting into my disguise and meeting these members of the Phenix family was life-changing for me.”

What they all have in common is that they belong to the extended Phenix Salon Family, the heart of a franchise that rocketed onto Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 500 Franchise List last year on a formula of success that puts the needs of the salon professionals first in making every business decision.

That is more than marketing. Founder and President Gina Rivera was a stylist long before she became founder and president of her own franchise company, and she still styles hair two or three days a week alongside her stylist father. The family entered the salon business 85 years ago, producing dozens of stylists and salon owners in the family. Phenix Salons now has more than 100 locations across the country.

“To assume the life of this other person and meet these salon professionals at Phenix Salon Suites was life-changing for me. I think we always know these people are with us, but to be with them and see their lives was truly a gift to me. Some of them have some serious challenges in their lives, but they were still working hard, taking care of their families, following dreams. They were an inspiration to me. I feel blessed to have met them. I am so grateful to count them as part of the Phenix Salon family.”

In her disguise, Gina did several cuts and styles, in addition to a weave, pedicure and straight-edge shave that were relatively new to her and challenging. “And this was a terrific education for me as a leader of the company,” Rivera said. “We truly strive to put the salon professionals first in our business model. To meet them and work with them in their salons like I did for ‘Undercover Boss’ added hugely to my insight. I’m the president of my company and I still style hair every week, but this got me even closer to the people who work in our salons and that was invaluable.”

“Undercover Boss,” in its sixth season, is a two-time Emmy Award-winning reality series that follows high-level executives as they slip anonymously into the rank-and-file of their own organizations. Each week, a different leader will sacrifice the comfort of their corner office for an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their operation.
