Liferay Marketplace Adds E-Commerce, Enabling Developers to Sell Apps Directly to the Liferay Community
Los Angeles, Calif. (PRWEB) March 18, 2014 -- Liferay, Inc., provider of the world’s leading enterprise-class open source portal, today announced the launch of new e-commerce features in Liferay Marketplace to further accelerate the addition of high-value Liferay-compatible apps to the online store. Developers will now be able to use their Liferay expertise to create and sell apps directly to Liferay Portal users, who will benefit from a richer selection of apps designed to meet specific business needs in an efficient and modular way.
Liferay Marketplace, first introduced in 2012, is a user-friendly, one-stop site that allows the Liferay ecosystem to develop, share, buy and sell apps. Marketplace is fully integrated into Liferay Portal, providing instant access to more than 500,000 deployments worldwide. Through it, developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) can provide enterprise applications and plugins that augment Liferay Portal’s core infrastructure, collaboration, and web content management (WCM) platform.
“Over the past one and a half years, Liferay Marketplace has grown remarkably, registering more than 600 developers from over 25 countries and growing almost five times its number of apps,” said John Choi, Liferay’s Director of Operations. “Adding e-commerce functionality was a critical next step to our continuous efforts to improve and evolve Liferay Marketplace. Developers are afforded a well-trafficked, proven platform to have their Liferay expertise pay dividends, and the Liferay community benefits from a growing universe of apps that meet specific business and technical needs. We are excited to see what people create.”
Benefits of Marketplace e-commerce for developers, partners, and ISVs include:
• The ability to set app prices with bundled pricing and discount capabilities;
• Varied licensing options such as standard licenses versus developer licenses;
• Different licensing terms – perpetual or annual;
• App license management based on Liferay Instance/per installation of Liferay Portal;
• The ability to offer renewable support services;
• Customizable geographic offerings;
• Easy management of sales taxes and other value-added taxes;
• App sales performance monitoring;
Liferay Marketplace customers will have access to:
• Streamlined payment processing;
• Easy renewal or upgrades of app licenses;
• Ability to purchase for personal use or for a project team;
• Automated app update notifications when Marketplace is accessed through Liferay Portal.
Arcusys, a Liferay certified partner and a grand prize winner of last year’s Liferay Marketplace App Contest, is one of many partners looking to take advantage of the new e-commerce features. Its eLearning platform, Valamis, has been downloaded more than 2,000 times and is one of the most popular third-party apps in Liferay Marketplace.
“We strongly believe in the enterprise app store concept as a distribution channel for enterprise applications. We are excited for new business opportunities as Liferay Marketplace further evolves with e-commerce,” said Jussi Hurskainen, CEO, Arcusys Ltd. “With Liferay Marketplace, we have been able to reach out and listen to what our customers really need in their future eLearning platform.”
