Mommi-POP is a sequel concept shop to Harlem Holi-POP which kicked off on Black Friday weekend in 2013 in support of local niche brands from Harlem to Los Angeles; from as far as Ghana and around the globe. The goal of the holiday inspired shopping event series is to nurture small business growth, entrepreneurs and community while expanding the Small Business Saturday artisan market ritual. Harris and Jones are a stylish concept design duo having both worked with top brands in fashion, film and television and are each now amid the launch of their own respective brands and the series of holiday concept shops.
Harris has over a decade of experience in makeup artistry and has worked with celebrities to include Gwen Stefani and Erykah Badu as well as Brooklyn’s own Amy Ryan and Edie Falco. She is currently makeup department head for POV and costume designer for American Framed. As a natural progression Harris launched FEMbot Cosmetics, her NY-centric brand of shadow kits, blush, blush brushes and organic lip balm as she conceptualized her first solo produced concept shop design. Jones brings over two decades experience in fashion and style to the Mommi-POP team, having recently premiered a short fashion film about his resort inspired collection at Soho Contemporary Art Gallery for Spring/Summer 2014 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Jones continues to be an A-list resource to top style icons and has worked with Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz and the First Lady Michelle Obama.
Jones states, “Melanie coined Harlem HoliPOP for the first event, thus we decided to continue with the celebratory spirit and compulsion to shop during these special times. We thought this could be an excellent opportunity to create a venue for emerging brands to engage each other while maximizing the profit margin of wholesale to retail. Realizing we have strength in numbers, this gives us the ability to nourish the fresh synergy of such a creative collaboration, uniting forces for an exposure none would get alone."
Seasoned in all things fashion Harris and Jones connected the style dots for Mommi-POP by commingling local brands and designers including Lorraine West of Tasha West Jewelry, Chiedza Makinnon of Afrodisiac Worldwide, Pierre’s Spicy, NPO Creations, Gwyneth Shoes, Sistah of Harlem, Traveling Butterflies, Dekonti, Your Faith Looks Familiar, Sophia’s Things, Ooshie, Ashaka Givens, Onion by Whitney Mero, Rich Kim, Damselfly Skincare, Hadiiya Barbel, Carlton Jones Collection and FEMbot Cosmetics. Micro fashion brands will include Jana Jarosz and Tiny Pants. Guests will be invited to enjoy mini rejuvenation sessions from wellness practitioner Sarah Eve Cardell while enjoying the sounds of DJ EmJay.
