In his latest novel, author James A. Terry takes readers to “The Great Hall,” to witness a journey of spiritual redemption in the afterlife. Exploring themes of mortality, judgment, the nature of life, death and the Supreme Being, this book will certainly give readers a compelling and contemplative literary experience – and a dose of jazz as well.
The narrative follows the life, death and afterlife of Lincoln Parker, a young hubristic rising jazz musician, who is killed in the middle of a live concert. He is given a second chance to redeem his lost soul in “The Great Hall.” In the titular location, he encounters a diverse group of people in predicaments similar to his own. Each person has been granted an opportunity to reverse their fate and save their souls. Finding solace in each other, these eclectic and flawed individuals try to make the most out of their second chance and find ways to make amends for their past lives, for “The Great Hall” allows each condemned soul to explain or to justify their existences.
This jazzman’s journey through the afterlife, with the narrative and the characters’ myriad reflections on life and death, is meant to help foster in readers “a better understanding about their relationship with their Supreme Being,” according to the author. Terry explores the story’s deep themes with a Catholic perspective, using “The Great Hall” as a stand in for purgatory while allowing his characters to face their conundrum without passing judgment on them – portraying them as real people with lives full of aspirations and regrets, no different from those reading about their metaphysical misadventures.
