SINKING SPRING, Pa. – Deep in the rainforest of Africa, an important and joyful event for an elephant herd is about to happen and this is very special for Jabari. He has been waiting for two long years for the calf’s arrival. He is the baby’s father.

The Tale of Tumeleng” (published by Xlibris) written by Ms. Ryke Leigh Douglas tells the realistic fiction story about Tumeleng, a baby elephant as she begins her life journey. In this book, readers will discover some of the serious challenges and dangers the elephants face in their never-ending-journey and constant struggle to survive in a world that is filled with life-threatening danger and environmental challenges.

The story also draws attention to the high level of intelligence these majestic giants display and their strong similarities to human-like behavior, which is exhibited by their respect for one another, their sense of responsibility to the family unit, their ability to learn and communicate, their emotional expressions of concern and love for one another and their need to mourn a death.

According to the author, children have been fascinated by the enormous size of this majestic and beautiful animal for centuries. She thinks they will enjoy the fictional characters, especially the antics of Tumeleng and the illustrations of “The Tale of Tumeleng.” She hopes parents and teachers will appreciate the opportunity to help young minds absorb the factual information that is woven into the story and motivates them to learn more about the world’s largest land mammal before it joins the dinosaurs.
