1. Red Sox Tickets 2014:
The Red Sox will be moving to a variable pricing structure this season (link to http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/bos/ticketing/seating_pricing.jsp). The new system reflects the demand for each game by placing the 81 home games into five different pricing tiers for each seating section. This season, a seat to a high-demand game might cost as much as $50 more than the same seat to a low-demand game.
The 16 dates in highest demand fall under Tier 1 pricing and include the home opener, all nine games against the New York Yankees, a July 4th weekend three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles, and three games against the Kansas City Royals later in July. Tickets for Tier 1 games will range from $20 in the upper bleachers to $70 for right-field boxes to $165 for premium field boxes. These high-demand games will face an average ticket increase of 17 percent from last season.
Tier 5, the lowest tier, will include weeknight games in April, May, and September against the Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, and Tampa Bay Rays. Tickets for Tier 5 games will range from $10 in the upper bleachers to $40 for right-field boxes to $115 for premium field boxes. These low-demand games will face an average ticket decrease of 12 percent from last season.
All in all, the variable price layout will increase the price of 16 games from last season and decrease the price of 16 other games.
2. Fenway Park Attendance:
The new pricing structure was driven partially by a desire to fill more seats in Fenway Park this season. Last season, Fenway attendance fell to 2.8 million, the first time in three years that attendance slipped below 3 million. The new system features prices starting as low as $10, allowing the Red Sox to provide ticket options accessible to a wider variety of fans.
