Local self-published romance author, Deborah Grimsley writing under the pen name Kimball Lee, has just signed with an East Coast agent at D4EO Literary Agency. With over a dozen novellas published via Kindle Direct Publishing and Smashwords, and over a quarter million downloads since beginning her career only eight months ago, Kimball Lee has achieved the American dream virtually overnight.
Lee released her first 30,000 word novella, “Legal Action” on August 1, 2013 and it was quickly ranked in the top 100 romance novels on Amazon. Three weeks later she followed with Legal Action 2, (writing 15 hours a day, 7 days a week) and its release pushed Kimball Lee into the top one percent of paid authors on Amazon just one month later, in September 2013. Since August, “Legal Action” has been downloaded over 200,000 times on Amazon alone. Over the past eight months, Kimball has written and released seven more installments in the “Surrendering Charlotte Chronicles” and has plans for at least four more, plus a prequel novel.
Her second series, “Temptation Road,” a paranormal/fantasy was released in the fall of 2013. Book 2 is currently available and has gained an avid fan-base, and Book 3 will be available by May 1, 2014. Kimball Lee is in talks with several major publishers and is in the final negotiating stage with Harlequin Desire.
“I would like to grow my career by getting some traditional “brick and mortar” publishers on board. Making the leap from indie to hybrid-author is exciting, but it’s not crucial at this point. I’ve achieved a great deal of success in a very short period of time and it’s been unbelievably rewarding, especially connecting with fans through social media,” Lee explained.
Kimball Lee’s success in self-publishing came after a year of querying traditional publishers with no success. Lee attributes much of her success to her eldest son, Alan Grimsley, who gave her the courage to give up querying and make the leap into self-publishing. Alan was a small business owner and an indie musician and he understood that a fan base could be built from the ground up with a little know-how and a lot of hard work. He has done all of the marketing, research, formatting and publication for her books. It turns out that this has become a family business for the Grimsley/Lee’s. Daughter-in-law, Liz, does proof reading and content editing, and they all work together toward a common goal for this new-age family business.
